New Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27768 Rolls Out to Canary Channel

Microsoft has just released a new update for Windows Insiders, with the launch of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27768 to the Canary Channel. This build introduces several improvements, fixes, and ongoing developments that Insiders can explore, offering a glimpse into the next steps in Windows 11's evolution.

Key Changes and Enhancements

File Explorer Updates
In this build, a new "New Folder" option has been added to the context menu in the navigation pane, making it quicker and easier to create folders directly from your Explorer window. This small but useful update will help enhance user experience and streamline file management.

Settings Update
Standard (non-admin) users can now modify time zones again through the Settings app, under Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time. This update restores this functionality, which was previously limited to admin users.

Bug Fixes in This Release

File Explorer Fixes
A variety of bugs have been addressed in this build, notably:

  • Date/Time Properties: An issue where the date/time properties of files were changing unexpectedly after being copied has been resolved.

  • Search Box: A problem where File Explorer could lose focus on the search box while typing has been fixed, improving search functionality.

  • Details Pane: The icons in the Details Pane now properly adjust when switching between light and dark themes, making the transition smoother.

  • Tab Duplicating: The black flash that appeared when duplicating a tab in File Explorer has been eliminated.

Input and Graphics
A fix has been applied for mouse cursor stuttering during movement, and Auto HDR issues that caused oversaturation in some games have also been addressed.

General Fixes
An issue causing some Canary Channel users to experience blue screen errors (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA) has been resolved, improving system stability.

Known Issues in This Build

Copilot+ Users
If you're using a Copilot+ PC and are moving from a different Windows channel, such as the Dev or Release Preview channels, you might face issues with Windows Hello PIN and biometric sign-ins. The error message “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available” may appear, but users can easily resolve it by resetting their PIN.

Display and Window Behavior
Some known issues persist, including the absence of accent-colored window borders and shadows around windows when enabled, despite settings indicating otherwise. Additionally, window animations might play even when turned off in settings. These issues are currently under investigation.

System File Scanning Issues
Running SFC /scannow could result in error messages in this build. The team is aware of this problem and is actively working on a fix.

File Explorer Rendering
Users may experience rendering issues when minimizing and restoring File Explorer windows. This glitch is under review, and a resolution is expected in a future update.

Important Notes for Insiders

This release is part of Microsoft's ongoing experimentation with Windows 11 features, and builds in the Canary Channel are not tied to any specific future release. This means some features may not be released to the general public, and certain changes could be reversed or modified based on feedback.

Because of the nature of Canary builds, they may contain experimental features that are tested gradually. Insiders should be prepared for frequent changes and possible feature removals. As always, feedback from Insiders plays a crucial role in shaping these features.

Clean Installation Reminder
For those looking to switch from the Canary Channel to a more stable version of Windows 11, please know that a clean installation is required. As these builds are part of ongoing development, switching to a different channel with lower build numbers will not be possible without reinstalling Windows.

What's Next?

The Canary Channel continues to be the testing ground for early-stage features and updates. Microsoft advises users to report issues or feedback through the Feedback Hub, especially regarding any localization problems or features that may not be fully polished yet.
